It is estimated that about 10% of cancer cases are predominantly hereditary or familial, while the rest are multifactorial (influenced by genetic and environmental factors). Hereditary or familial cancer is usually manifested in several individuals of the same family, which is why its effect is usually highly damaging.
The genetic bases of some of these cancers have been identified, making it possible to perform a genetic test to identify the individuals in a family that have inherited predisposition to cancer, which subsequently permits concentrating medical vigilance and, when necessary, prophylactic measures and chemoprevention only on the individuals with higher risk.
|
For example, an association has been identified between certain mutations in the BRCA1 and BRCA2 genes and some types of breast cancer. Relationships have also been described between certain genes and colon and skin cancer.
If you believe you might have a predisposition to genetically based cancer, you can contact the experts at the
Instituto Valenciano de Genética
, who will personally advise you.
